IP and IK protection ratings

ATEX control stations with emergency stop

The IP rating measures how well an enclosure is sealed against solids and liquids (EN 60529). The IK rating measures its resistance to mechanical impacts (EN 62262).

Reading an IP rating

The first digit refers to solids and dusts, the second to liquids.

RatingSolidsLiquids
IP54Dust-protectedSplashing water
IP65Dust-tightWater jets
IP66Dust-tightPowerful water jets
IP67Dust-tightTemporary immersion

Our Ex d and Ex e enclosures are rated IP66 (IP65 for the BAS-P control stations): they are suitable for outdoor installation.

IP and ATEX

For Ex e increased safety, the enclosure must provide at least IP54. In dust zones, dust-tightness (IP6X) is essential for Ex t protection by enclosure.

Impact resistance

Custom ATEX cabinet, Antidéflagrant Service project (2017)

ATEX standards require impact tests, for example 7 J for high mechanical risk and 4 J for low risk for a group II enclosure (EN/IEC 60079-0).
