Hydrogen and ATEX: which enclosures for your installations?

Hydrogen and ATEX: which enclosures for your installations?

The rise of hydrogen is multiplying the installations to equip in explosive atmospheres: electrolysers, refuelling stations, storage, fuel cells. Yet hydrogen is one of the most demanding gases.

Why is hydrogen special?

  • Very low ignition energy.
  • A wide explosive range in air (about 4% to 75%).
  • A flame that spreads very easily, hence its classification in the most severe group, IIC.

IIB+H2 or IIC?

Custom ATEX cabinet, Antidéflagrant Service project (2024)

IIB+H2 equipment is certified for group IIB gases and for hydrogen. It is enough for most hydrogen installations without acetylene or carbon disulphide. IIC equipment covers all gases, subject to its temperature class, including acetylene.

Our solutions

  • CAS IIB+H2 enclosures in aluminium alloy or 316L stainless steel, cathodic protection version available.
  • EJB IIB+H2 enclosure, down to −60 °C / up to +80 °C.
  • DAS, CAS 140 and EJC IIC enclosures.

Planning the installation

Hydrogen is very light and builds up at the top of rooms. Ventilation, zoning and enclosure positions must take this into account. Our design office supports you from the design stage. Tell us about your project
